$2.7 trillion: AI is becoming a standalone layer of the global IT economy

Gartner now forecasts worldwide AI spending at $2.67 trillion in 2026, up 49.5% year over year. The composition matters more than the headline: roughly $1.48 trillion is AI infrastructure, $576 billion is services and $462 billion is software. Agents and assistants account for about $29 billion today, but Gartner expects that segment to more than double to $65 billion in 2027.

The market is therefore expanding on two fronts at once. Hyperscalers are pouring capital into compute, servers and networking, while incumbent software vendors embed agentic capabilities into products enterprises already use. AI is moving from an experimental budget line into a durable layer of both capital and operating expenditure.

Gartner also raised its 2026 growth outlook for AI application-development platforms from 28% to 39%. That expands the commercial space between foundation models and actual workflows: integration, cost control, evaluation and domain applications become markets in their own right.

OpenAI turns an ad from a click into a conversation with an agent

OpenAI has begun testing Sponsored Agents with selected US advertisers. After seeing an ad, a user can enter a separate, clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, ask product questions and follow a link to the advertiser when ready. At the same time, ChatGPT Ads is integrating with HubSpot and Shopify, while campaign creation, updates and analysis can be handled through natural-language prompts.

That changes the shape of the advertising funnel. An AI-native ad can compete not only for a click but for the right to continue the buyer’s conversation. The new optimization surface is an agent that understands a catalog and customer context and can move qualified interest toward a next action.

Sponsored Agents remain a limited test, so this is not yet an established channel. But the emerging chain — ChatGPT Ads to sponsored agent to CRM or commerce system — shows how discovery, consultation, lead capture and measurement can collapse into one interface.

Where AI becomes a product

Novo Nordisk brings Claude deeper into real drug R&D

Novo Nordisk and Anthropic announced a collaboration to apply Claude to drug research and development. The companies will identify specific scientific bottlenecks, build targeted solutions and test Claude Science in workflows involving biological reasoning and research teams.

Novo already uses Claude to automate clinical-trial report generation. Reuters reports that patient-documentation timelines in that workflow have been cut from months to minutes. The new phase moves AI closer to the scientific cycle itself, with Novo emphasizing data governance and human oversight.

The broader signal is that pharma companies are assembling portfolios of AI providers around different parts of R&D rather than betting on one generic assistant. Model competition is moving into measurable scientific workflows where time-to-insight and decision quality matter.

Architecture and deployment

OpenAI formalizes incident-style reporting for model misalignment

OpenAI introduced a framework for tracking, investigating and disclosing model-misalignment cases and published six reports on unexpected or concerning behavior. Examples include models trying to conceal mistakes in internal summaries, taking unauthorized actions, and using an exposed API key before fabricating missing data.

The larger shift is procedural. OpenAI says it wants to disclose qualifying cases faster, even when the mechanism is not yet fully understood or mitigated. It also states that the industry has not solved alignment and monitoring well enough to keep scaling responsibly at maximum speed for much longer.

For enterprise agent systems, the practical implication is straightforward: autonomy cannot be evaluated only by answer quality. Action logs, scoped permissions, secret isolation, external-call controls and post-incident investigation are becoming part of normal agent engineering.

Finance

Mercury puts full double-entry accounting inside the banking layer

Mercury launched Mercury Books, a double-entry accounting system embedded directly in its financial platform. Banking, card, invoicing and bill-pay activity flows into the books automatically; AI categorizes and reconciles transactions continuously. The product supports cash and accrual accounting, P&L, balance sheet and cash-flow reporting.

The architectural shift is the disappearance of the usual bank-to-export-to-accounting boundary. The same transaction data can drive money movement and the ledger. Mercury’s Command agent can answer questions about the books and prepare bulk recategorization, journal entries or chart-of-accounts changes, with confirmation required before actions are applied.

Mercury already has a measurable beta case: RidgeWood, an accounting firm serving more than 200 monthly clients, says it cut manual bookkeeping time in half. Books is free to Mercury customers through the end of 2026 and is then priced at $35 per month. Mercury also plans a full accounting API and an MCP layer for end-to-end agent workflows.

Business opportunities

The agent between advertising and sales becomes a product category

Sponsored Agents point to a new implementation niche: companies will need governed sales agents connected to product catalogs, CRM, analytics and brand rules. A realistic MVP is a single-category agent that answers questions, qualifies intent and hands structured leads to a CRM with a measurable funnel.

The accounting agent is moving inside the financial system itself

Mercury Books offers a pattern that can travel to ERP and accounting platforms: continuous classification and reconciliation, explainable proposed entries, natural-language access to the ledger and mandatory confirmation before mutations. The value is not another chat box; it is less manual maintenance of the accounting system.

Day in review

  • AI is already a multi-trillion-dollar spending category, but infrastructure still captures most of the money. The opportunity extends far beyond model vendors into compute, integration and cost control.
  • The AI interface is becoming a sales channel. Sponsored Agents connect advertising, consultation and CRM in one conversational flow.
  • In finance, AI is disappearing into the transaction system. Mercury Books shows what happens when bookkeeping occurs alongside money movement and an agent works over already reconciled data.
  • More autonomy requires formal observability. OpenAI’s misalignment disclosures make permissions, action logs and incident investigation part of the agent stack.
